Interview Takeaway

Favorite quote from the interview, “I think of memes as kind of just paintings, film, any type of media. They reflect and amplify all aspects of humanity, the worst and the best in us. There’s a lot we can bring as critical media analysts to the question of memes and look at them more broadly to understand their impacts on society.” an xiao mina Meedan

This is the image that came to my mind when Professor Gerson asked An Xiao about memes created immediately after the announcement that president Trump has coronavirus. I saw the meme yesterday on Instagram.

I learned that a “filter bubble” is the idea that on the internet we only see people we agree with. I also learned that as we’re on google or social media, we mostly see content related to our recent searches but a way of learning about different communities is by searching with a private browser or mode. A private tab or a fake profile that takes us to other accounts within that filter bubble, accounts we usually wouldn’t see or follow. Later those interactions take us to other communities and other bubbles.
